Celebration, Florida

We are a long way from Florida now…but it still haunts us! This is from Celebration, Orlando, Florida…Celebration is Disney’s planned community…one can drive from Celebration right into Disney…in many ways, Celebration IS Disney, a suburban theme park….

Celebration, FL

Read about Celebration in Florida Trend magazine: LINK

“Along traffic-choked U.S. 192 near Orlando, a bucolic wooden water tower stands apart from the rest of the tourist-gaudy highway, set off by expansive green lawns and a white split-rail fence. A banner on the tower heralded the entrance to a new, made-from-scratch community: “Disney’s Town of Celebration.”…Celebration is full of type-A personalities highly involved in everything from the schools to the dozens of civic organizations they’ve formed in town. But they’ve also made Celebration something of a homogeneous, red-state enclave: Residents are generally conservative and have some of the highest voter registration and election turnout rates in central Florida. Big SUVs clog streets that were designed to promote walking: Downtown Celebration has a parking shortage. The median household income is $87,000, compared with surrounding Osceola County’s $38,200.”

This window advert is in front of the Doctors Without Borders building on Plantage Middenlaan near our hotel. It is simply an amazing piece of public art. Check out the DWB website at the following LINK

So in case you were wondering what happened at elasticlimit… well the answer is complicated. For now, we are in Amsterdam (finally) for the summer. We are leading a summer study group in Art and Design in the Netherlands. There is a digital photo class, a survey of studio art class, a survey of Dutch Design class, and a drawing class. Check back regularly to see student work, posts from the students, and enough online Amsterdam experiences to choke a horse. The digital photo students and the survey of studio art students are required to post to elasticlimit as part of their classes. So its another art collective again this summer, packed with images and ideas.

Wish you were here…

Also check the face book site for the group… its very informative. LINK

…and by the way, in case you haven’t heard, when we finish here in Amsterdam we’re moving to Hawaii…

Goodbye Florida!
