Sprawl in Powell, Ohio. 2006.

Urban Sprawl in Powell Ohio. Welcome. Anyone for a game of GOLF?

Urban sprawl is a term for the rapid and expansive growth of a greater metropolitan area, traditionally suburbs (or exurbs) over a large area. The term is used worldwide to describe urban growth but it is used especially in the United States, where political and social factors (in particular, the post-World War II population boom) have led to urban sprawl in many parts of the country.

While the phrase has been in use for many years, some consider “urban sprawl” to be a loaded term and it can have negative connotations. The phrase has been used by some critics to describe almost any urban growth, but this usage can be misleading.
